The Life of Jack - Final Chapter and Epilogue

Jul. 6th, 2008 | 11:44 am
posted by: [info]rt_in_town in [info]brokebackslash

Summary: At last we come to the end of our narrator's tale.... Someone has also appended an epilogue.

Acknowledgements: As with all works written by men, this one would fracas without the support and protection of ladies. When my story takes a serious turn, I recall with gratitude the steadfast interest of mariez65 - may I have occasion to say Brava! back to you someday.... and the steadfast humor of pattieono....

Warnings: Religious eroticism, self-mortification, impiety, naughty boy loving contained herein. I invite readers to come unspoiled, though internet available synopses of Thaïs may help you decide if this story is for you.

Disclaimers: Brokeback Mountain and Massenet's opera are beautiful works that I had no hand in creating. Can I be forgiven for the sin of playing with their deeply memorable characters?

Chapter 11

To all readers who have shared this journey with me: like all songs of this era, this one is dedicated to the ladies it entertains.... Many hours and days has my imagination been swept up by the tale of these two, and the experience is all the richer for hearing your composed words, your noble thoughts.

And Judy, you were there for the beginning and end.... A fount of inspiration opened for me when you wrote about a fascinating opera production you had seen a while ago. Months later, your encouragement was invaluable for the emergence of these last chapters.

Thank you, all you fair guardian spirits.

Four-Two Offense (Chapter 15)

Jul. 6th, 2008 | 05:48 pm
posted by: [info]annabirmingham in [info]brokebackslash

Summary - AU/AU Jack and Ennis are on the 1st volleyball team at high school. Jack is a junior and Ennis a senior. They didn't like each other at first (but times are certainly changing)

Last chapter recap - E and J went on their surfing 'date' and had fun in the water, but they got carried away with a bit of rough and tumble on the beach, which one witness did not approve of...

Jack and Ennis (plus other BBM characters) do sadly not belong to me, *sniff*. This is written purely for fun.

Special thanks as always [info]hesamathgeek for the beta, I really appreciate the support :)

Warnings - m/m action (and a bit of angst)

Feedback - yes please!

*cue ominous heat-will-fry-your-brain music*

So we went to Ribfest yesterday. It was only supposed to be about 80, but when the only shade is a plywood cutout of a pig's ass, it's easy to get overheated. At least we wore hats and managed to remember to put on some sunscreen. The real problem was that my stomach picked that day to start being really jumpy, so that the first thing I did upon getting to the fest -- drinking a big glass of cold lemonade -- set it into a tizzy that took a while to resolve. I did, however, get about half a dozen really excellent ribs from various vendors, some roasted corn (good, but not as good as what we made on Friday) and a black cow.

By the time we hit the back 40, I'd discovered the tent where there were tables and chairs set up, so I took my black cow and my overheated self inside to cool off. I managed to sit at the same table with what was probably the only gay couple in a tent filled with those oversize yuppie strollers and a lot of elderly people, fanning themselves and snarfing down prodigious amounts of barbeque. They were maybe our age, friendly and funny, though C. was a little drunker than was probably good for him. I figure it was easy to over-do the beer in that heat and he was super nice so I didn't get put off. He had two broken arms and said that it was because he'd gotten chased by a bear up in Michigan. Then he admitted that it was because he fell down at a Stevie Nicks concert, and we all agreed that the bear story was better. J., his partner, seemed to be taking good care of him. I believe he said they'd been together for 10 years.

By the time we finished our corn and in spite of the cooler temps in the tent, we were all ready to boogie. My hair, was soaked with sweat and full of barbeque sauce, margarine and probably a few bugs in spite of having worn my floppy old-lady's hat the whole afternoon. We'd originally planned to stop at Costco on the way home (We'd done World Market on the way out.) but nobody really wanted to. My feet hurt and all I wanted was some cold water and a nap.

BTW, I just love World Market. So much cool stuff; I could have spent double what I did, which is a horrifying thought. But I found wind chimes to replace the sun face in front (and which, I discovered, is broken. Bah.) as well as a new kitty dish, and a gorgeous, uh, something-or-other. It's bigger than a shawl but smaller than a throw, so I don't really know what to call it, but it's purple, with bright flowers on it, and was on sale.

And now it's time to make some coffee and get something done.

Reckoning

Jul. 6th, 2008 | 08:56 am
posted by: [info]zennie

Been listening to Ani's Reckoning lately, especially the songs "Your Next Bold Move" and "Subdivision." I guess after 7 and a half years of Bush, I'm back to being sick to my stomach that we came to this. For someone who was engaged and involved in the crazy left political movements of the 90s like Act Up and the Anti-Racist Action group and Lesbian Avengers, the shock of Bush's appointment and the the way he was able to push through truly horrific bills post-9/11 made me physically ill. I took to re-reading 1984 every 6 months and trying to weather the storm. I guess it just hit me, recently, that the long national nightmare might not end with Bush, that this storm might just take us down. And we have no one to blame but ourselves. We've believed our delusions, that oil will always be cheap, that the price of houses will always go up, that we don't have to take care of our massive infrastructure and invest in those quote-unquote socialized (read responsible government caring for its citizens) projects like national health care and public transportation.

For the first time in my life, I'm contributing to a political campaign because we can't keep going on this track and I see a sliver of hope with Obama. But I wish the money spent on trying to be president were going to better things. Like Bob Herbert said in his column yesterday, empty symbolism has replaced the hard work and sacrifice required to keep a nation great. I dunno if we can put that work in anymore. Apparently, we'll only give our wasteful and destructive ways when forced to (they may stop making Hummers. Yay?) *sigh* Yeah, I got nothing.

Coming of age during the plague of Reagan and Bush
Watching Capitalism gun down Democracy

What a waste of thumbs that are opposable
To make machine that are disposable

I wrote this three years ago for [info]crazybutsound's birthday and did not write the second chapter. I think now I might.
I was not in B7 or DV at the time - don't expect the heroes to look like the boys in both fandoms.
The relationship though is a love/hate one, and it is rather dark at times.
It's unbetaed, I seem to remember.
The names came to me just like that - I kept them.

m/m explicit

and so on... But then you know me!

I need input.

Since I ride my horse (Corona) a whole ONE TIME A WEEK, and just on trail rides, and she is fat and crazy since I never take her off the farm, should I randomly decide to go to a wee bitty show with a couple girls I work with on Thursday?

I might die. But it might be fun, y/n?

....?

Show of (virtual) hands!!

(And, no, I am not planning on wearing the Christmas Outfit of Awesome in my icon; pffft)

And also, I frakkin hate the 4th of July. That is all.
